Well established in the field of historically informed performance, the Italian ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro has recently expanded: it now includes a choir, and this is its first solo recording. Conducted by Giuseppe Maletto, the ensemble presents here Gesualdo’s fascinating first book of Sacræ Cantiones. Less well known than his madrigals, the nineteen five-part motets that make up this work explore the theme of repentance through the Liturgy of Penance and the figure of the Virgin Mary. The painfully voluptuous chromaticism and the expressive intensity and refinement of the lines make this work one of the most singular of that period. Gesualdo’s interpretation of the liturgical text is intensely dramatic and highly personal. Il Pomo d’Oro renders perfectly the mysterious beauty of this music.

L’ensemble italien Il Pomo d’Oro, figure de proue des ensembles sur instruments d’époque, s’est récemment agrandi : il accueille désormais un chœur, dont voici le premier enregistrement soliste. Sous la baguette de Giuseppe Maletto, fondateur de La Compagnia del Madrigale, l’ensemble entame son aventure discographique avec le fascinant premier livre des Sacræ Cantiones de Gesualdo. Moins connus que ses madrigaux, les 19 motets sacrés à cinq voix qui le composent explorent notamment le thème du repentir à travers la liturgie de la pénitence et la figure mariale. La volupté douloureuse des chromatismes, l’intensité expressive peu commune pour le genre et la sophistication des lignes font de ce recueil l’un des plus singuliers de la période. Dans un va-et-vient constant entre objectivité proprement liturgique et subjectivité madrigalesque, Gesualdo délivre une interprétation hautement personnelle du texte liturgique, intensément dramatique, dont Il Pomo d’Oro restitue parfaitement la mystérieuse beauté.
